Chant is my favorite restaurant in Hyde Park amongst several others. My service is always great. This time i ordered a few appetizers and cocktails as a quick lunch date. I was filled to capacity after everything we ordered, . I always order the infamous chicken and black bean soup with avocado. it never disappoints. It was my first time trying the deviled eggs p, lobster and shrimp dip as well as the seafood cakes. I have no complaints about anything i tried, everything was cooked to perfection packed with flavor. presentation of each appetizer made the food look even more delicious. I enjoy that chant even when busy is still intimate and very inviting.
I had been to Chant in years past to listen live music and DJ live sets, but had never been to dine. On my Sunday off, I wanted to take my new, amazingly smart, brand-new, high school senior out to eat. Since it was a last-minute decision and we lived just a five-minute walk away, we popped in with no reservation. It was pretty busy that evening but we were seated right away. Our friendly server came right over, took our orders and we absorbed the ambiance. Very chill and unpretentious, beautiful Asian-inspired decor with chill lounge music playing in the background. As we were catching up on our lives over the summer (she was mostly gone pursuing academic opportunities, while I was working 12-hour days), next thing you know our food appears! My daughter had the Korean fried chicken which was fried and seasoned to perfection and they happily subbed out the mac n cheese for bok choy; I had the sambal catfish with mac n cheese and it was absolutely delectable. The portions were so generous we had enough to take home for lunch the next day. The only reason this review isn't 5 stars is because when I paid with cash, the server asked if I needed change. Ummm yes, I need my change. I feel it's so inappropriate to ask that question because it puts pressure on the guest to overtip. I'm in the industry and understand the importance of tipping, but most restaurants should train their servers to say, "I'll be right back with your change." Aside from that, I highly recommend Chant and will be back.
The Beef short rib dinner is delicious. It is extremely tender and flavorful. This saved the review. Avoid the crab and shrimp dip. Honestly, this should be pulled from the menu. That's how terrible it was. I also ordered the chocolate cake which I did not enjoy. It had a chocolate mousse frosting and raspberry jam, and the menu gave no mention of that. I ordered a Mai tai which was tasty.
Ordered dine in - the pad Thai was absolutely amazing; I see why everyone orders it. Next time I'd probably add extra beef but the meat was tender and the dish was appropriately seasoned. I loved it and will order again when I'm in the area.
